PH PIANO
The PH piano is a modern interpretation of the incredible Danish design by futurist Poul Henningsen, originally created in 1931! This stunning specimen of piano artistry features a shape reminiscent of a fantastical creature from another world. The PH grand piano has a deconstructed body that rests on three narrow metal legs resembling an insect’s slender limbs. Its gently curved lid and iconic oversized music stand consist of metal frames covered with clear acrylic glass that evokes the wings of a dragonfly. These transparent elements allow you to appreciate the beauty at the heart of the PH grand piano – its action.

Everything about this instrument defies every stereotype of what a traditional piano looks like. Like all design icons, the PH grand piano is timeless. When it was first introduced in 1931, it was just as futuristic as it is today. Its unique beauty is unmistakably Danish, while the craftsmanship and quality are distinctly German. As with other premium German-made pianos, no detail is too small for the skilled craftsmen under the iconic Blüthner name. Produced in a made-to-order fashion today, the PH piano can adopt many different personalities that reflect its owner while retaining its exotic beauty and singular design. Even without the remarkable qualities of a premium grand piano, the PH would still be one of the rarest pieces of furniture in the world; when combined with the performance quality of its craftsmanship, the PH becomes a prized and unique possession.

HISTORY
In 1931, the world witnessed many historical design milestones. Following the Chrysler Building, which was the tallest in the world for less than a year starting in 1930, the Empire State Building was completed in 1931. The Rockefeller Center began to emerge as the largest construction project in New York’s history and as a temple of Art Deco. The Bauhaus movement in Europe was at its peak, while renowned Danish furniture designer Poul Henningsen envisioned new forms.
As if echoing Chekhov, “We need new forms…new forms,” he conceptualized a piano that embodies the spirit of the future and the alluring blend of nature and machinery. The bionic shape of the frame, legs, and music stand stands in stark contrast to the metal from which most of them are made. This dichotomy reflects the zeitgeist of an era captivated by early visions of a robotic future, remarkable inventions, and the dominance of science and industry. Yet, the design of the PH grand piano also conveys the fragility and moving tenderness at the heart of music: an ephemeral beauty that exists only for the duration of its sound before vanishing forever. This quality of delicacy is attributed to the large transparencies of the lid and music stand, but it is the combination of all elements that evokes an emotion uniquely elicited by the PH grand piano. Poul Henningsen recognized that he had crafted a piano unlike anything the market had ever envisioned. However, in true Scandinavian style, he gave it a name consisting of just two minimal letters—those of his name—PH. What is truly remarkable about his piano design is that it requires no updates for 2025.
The world has leaped into the future just as those dreamers envisioned, yet this incredible instrument remains a vision of the future even to contemporary eyes. What Bluthner adds to the PH grand piano today are the various material options that modern technology allows, only to enhance this spectacular Danish design. Each new technical feature represents the best traditions of German quality for which Bluthner is renowned worldwide.
