Self-Playing Piano

Self-playing pianos, also known as player pianos, have existed for several decades. The exciting part is that only now has the technology that truly makes them magical developed to enhance quality music production. Early player pianos sounded much more like mechanical instruments from the early 20th century, essentially large-scale music boxes.

Today’s player piano systems are remarkable advancements in computerized robotics, capable of capturing the most subtle nuances of a live performance and reproducing it almost identically.

Two premium piano manufacturers have their proprietary systems: Yamaha offers Disklavier, while Steinway features Spirio. Other player piano systems are open-source and can be installed on any brand of piano.

How does the self-playing piano work ?

PNOmation3

The QRS PNOmation system is a state-of-the-art solution that utilizes Direct WiFi (StandAlone mode), rendering an internet connection unnecessary since the piano effectively has its own WiFi network. It also offers Bluetooth connectivity to any device (regardless of the operating system), allowing seamless integration of third-party apps with your piano—ranging from YouTube and Finale to GarageBand. Imagine your grand piano equipped with a computer brain. Additionally, it fully integrates with Alexa and Apple Watch, enabling you to communicate with your piano. You can log on as if it’s in StandAlone mode, which is excellent for Wi-Fi client setups, internet outages, and accessing features without an internet connection. In StandAlone mode, you can interact with multiple players or pianos on a network, choose auto-updates, enable PNOcloud and PNOmation Cloud backups, and integrate with smart home systems. It functions concurrently with the Wi-Fi Direct mode.

Extra features include Bluetooth Audio In-stream content that connects to the system via QRS’s secure AMI signal, making it possible to watch what your piano plays in real-time on any device.

QRS PNOmation

PNOmation is designed to support the evolution of its technology, ensuring that all subsequent upgrades to the system will have full integration capability. This forward-thinking approach guarantees you will always have the latest and most advanced features in the exciting world of self-playing pianos.

player system solenoids

BEST IN CLASS SOLENOIDS

PNOmation utilizes longer, fully encased solenoids that provide superior sound at softer dynamics. They are also free from corrosion and self-lubricating. The Controller User Interface is seamlessly integrated into the body of the grand piano (or upright), eliminating any visible ‘box’ hanging from the instrument.
The existing technology appears simple—like all brilliant things. The solenoid is positioned at the back of the key, and the infrared optical sensor detects the velocity and speed of the impact. It lifts the key end (in contrast to the finger pressing it down), activating the hammer that strikes the string. However, there’s much more to it than that. In today’s self-playing pianos, the supercomputer calculates the action’s nanoseconds to ensure the results are indistinguishable from a live performance.

Benefits of Factory Installation

All quality player piano systems perform best when installed at the factory. Because the intricate mechanism is seamlessly integrated into the acoustic instrument, it requires the special skills and expertise of trained artisans to execute this process. Each grand piano features different micro components, dimensions, and specifications, making aftermarket installation potentially less than optimal for achieving the best possible results.

The magic occurs next. Due to the mechanism’s location, you can also play the piano while it plays itself! In other words, you can duet with ‘yourself’ or your piano. When was the player piano invented?

The player piano was invented in the late 19th century, with the first practical version emerging around 1895. In 1876, early concepts of self-playing pianos appeared at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. By 1895, the first fully functional pneumatic player piano was developed. In 1900, the Aeolian Company began mass-producing player pianos, leading to their widespread popularity. These pianos utilized perforated paper rolls to trigger the keys, enabling them to play automatically — a remarkable feat of pre-digital automation.
